Background

Ralph Bunche was an American political scientist, academic, and diplomat. He was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1960; the first African American to be so honored, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

The Ralph Bunche High School building was constructed in 1949 to provide “separate but equal” educational opportunities to African American students in King George County schools and remained in service until King George integrated its schools in 1968.

The building continued to be used for other educational purposes until 1998.  Thanks to the diligence of the Ralph Bunche High School alumni, the building is on the Virginia National Register of Historic Places.
